UMDNJ Board of Trustees Welcomes New Member
Robert J. Maro, Jr., M.D. sworn in at Tuesday's regular meeting.

NEW BRUNSWICK—Dr. Robert J. Maro Jr. was sworn in today as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
Dr. Maro is a member of the volunteer faculty at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Camden, where he is clinical assistant professor of medicine. He was recommended by Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts under legislation signed last year by Governor Jon S. Corzine. A2900 expanded Board membership from 11 to 19 members. Today’s action brings the number of board members to 17.
"I am pleased to welcome Dr. Maro to the Board of Trustees," said Board Chairman Robert Del Tufo. "We are grateful to Governor Corzine and Assembly Speaker Roberts for this outstanding appointment to our Board. Dr. Maro's credentials and experience will make him contributions invaluable as we continue to move the University forward."
Dr. Maro has a private practice in general internal medicine and geriatrics, and served his internship and residency at Cooper University Medical Center in Camden, where he was chief resident in 1983. He is currently a member of the attending staff at both Cooper and Virtua Health System. SJ, a magazine that covers Southern New Jersey, has included Dr. Maro in its "Top Docs" list.
"I'm honored to be asked to serve on the Board of Trustees," said Dr. Maro. "I hope to bring my business experience to the Board, as I'm the managing partner of a large Internal Medicine practice. I am also an advocate for aggressive education of the medical students, exposing them to as many patients as possible, as well as educating them on the business of medicine. I believe senior physicians should be mentors to the students, and nurture the passion that the young students have for their profession."
Dr. Maro earned a BS in biology from St. Joseph University in Philadelphia and his MD from Jefferson Medical College there. A resident of Cherry Hill, he is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Internal Medicine and the New Jersey and Camden County medical societies. He also serves on the Executive Committee of Cooper University Medical Center and as treasurer of the medical staff at the hospital.
UMDNJ is the nation's largest free-standing public health sciences university with more than 5,700 students attending the state's three medical schools, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions, a school of nursing and its only school of public health, on five campuses. Last year, there were more than two million patient visits to UMDNJ facilities and faculty at campuses in Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Scotch Plains, Camden and Stratford. UMDNJ operates University Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center in Newark, and University Behavioral HealthCare, a mental health and addiction services network.
