Registration Begins for Annual "High Speed Chase
for the Cure 5K Run/3K Walk"
CINJ Programs and Patient Relief Fund to Benefit from Proceeds

NEW BRUNSWICK — Registration is now open for the fifth-annual High Speed Chase for the Cure 5K Run/3K Walk, proceeds from which will benefit The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ).
High Speed Chase for the Cure was started in 2003 by Rutgers University police officers as a way to honor one of their own, as 26-year veteran of the force, Detective Robert "Mac" McIntyre lost his battle with cancer in 1999. The annual event raises money to support cancer research, treatment, community outreach and to assist cancer patients with financial needs they may have during treatment including the purchase of medications; medical supplies and equipment; transportation to and from CINJ on treatment days and other necessities. CINJ provides comprehensive care to all patients regardless of ability to pay. Last year, CINJ had more than 73,000 patient visits. Since the event's inception, nearly $20,000 has been raised to support these items.
This year's event will take place on Sunday, September 9 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center (RAC) in Piscataway. Check-in is from 8:00 to 9:15 a.m. with the race beginning at 9:30 a.m. The entry fee for the public is $20.00 before August 24 and $25.00 after. Students registering before September 5 will pay $5.00 and $10.00 after. Course roads are USATF certified and scoring will be computerized with results being posted on http://www.compuscore.com/. Awards will be given to both males and females in various age categories. Males and females also will be eligible for an overall first, second or third place award.
The event is sponsored by Citigroup Smith Barney, and is held in partnership with the Rutgers University Police Department, the Rutgers Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association and Pan-Hellenic Council; the Rutgers Daily Targum; the Rutgers University Department of Student Affairs; the Rutgers Student Movement Against Cancer organization (SMAC); and The Cancer Institute of New Jersey Foundation (CINJF).
Michelle Walker, director of annual giving for CINJF, is hopeful the event will continue to grow, "Our patients, their families and communities throughout the state benefit from this wonderful collaboration between the students, law enforcement, business and the greater Piscataway/New Brunswick communities. Their generosity will support cancer care, education and research that will find better ways to treat, control and prevent cancer."
