UMDNJ Scientists, Clinicians and Students Present
Findings at Annual Research Day Event

STRATFORD — Nearly 70 research projects that explore the miracles and mysteries of health and medical science are on display at the 11th annual Research Day program at the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine today at the medical school's Academic Center, on Laurel Road, in Stratford. Dr. Vivian Pinn, director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will deliver the keynote address, “NIH Perspectives on Women’s Health Research and Biomedical Careers.”
“Research Day highlights the fact that our campus is the hub for medical research in South Jersey,” said Dr. Thomas Cavalieri, interim dean of UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine. "Our school routinely receives more in federal research grants than any other osteopathic medical school in the country and we are the only school in South Jersey that has a Ph.D. program in biomedical sciences.”
This year’s program reflects the wide expanse of research conducted on the Stratford campus by medical students, faculty and research scientists. Projects on display will shed new light on the genesis of Alzheimer’s disease, cancer cell growth, the impact of tai chi on aging and the effectiveness of osteopathic manipulative medicine on multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and the symptoms of ear infections in children.
The annual Research Day celebration will conclude with a presentation of awards to the best student and graduate student research projects. Throughout the event, UMDNJ researchers will be available to answer questions about their projects.
UMDNJ is the nation's largest free-standing public health sciences university with more than 5,700 students attending the state's three medical schools, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions, a school of nursing and its only school of public health, on five campuses. Last year, there were more than two million patient visits to UMDNJ facilities and faculty at campuses in Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Scotch Plains, Camden and Stratford. UMDNJ operates University Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center in Newark, and University Behavioral HealthCare, a mental health and addiction services network.
