New Mini-Medical School Offered at UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine

STRATFORD — There are no cadavers to dissect and it doesn’t require a four year commitment, but the new Mini-Medical School, beginning on March 14 at the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine, will have a lot in common with the Stratford medical school. The Mini-Medical School will hold its eight, weekly classes in the same classrooms where the university’s medical students learn. Nationally and internationally-known faculty from the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine will lead the weekly class discussions that include topics such as infectious diseases, biological nanotechnology, anti-depressant medications and menopause.
“The Mini-Medical School is really a great opportunity for a wide range of people from the surrounding communities,” said Dr. Thomas Cavalieri, interim dean of the UMDNJ-School of Medicine. “It can be a starting point for high school and college students who are wondering what medical school is really like. It’s also a wonderful option for those who are just looking for a convenient and inexpensive way to increase their knowledge about an array of medical subjects.”
The Mini-Medical School at the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine will meet on eight consecutive Wednesday evenings beginning on March 14, with each session devoted to an in-depth discussion of a unique medical topic. Classes will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Academic Center, on the medical school’s Laurel Road campus, in Stratford. Class size is limited and a $25 fee is due upon registration to cover the cost of course materials. UMDNJ is the nation's largest free-standing public health sciences university with more than 5,500 students attending the state's three medical schools, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions, a school of nursing and its only school of public health, on five campuses.
