Free Public Health Leadership Program Announced at UMDNJ

NEWARK — The New Jersey Center for Public Health Preparedness at the UMDNJ-School of Public Health is accepting applications for its 2007 Public Health Leadership Initiative for Emergency Response (PHLIER) program that begins in October. This program is free to current public health professionals and features case-based seminars, led by expert panelists from throughout the state, on such topics as public health law, emerging pathogens, bioterrorism, and natural disasters.

“In an age where natural and man-made disasters loom large, the leadership abilities of public health administrators are challenged, as they never have been before,” said Dr. Glenn Paulson, director of NJCPHP. “PHLIER is more than leadership training. It is about applying skills in new and innovative ways.”

The New Jersey Center for Public Health Preparedness at UMDNJ, based in the UMDNJ-School of Public Health, was established in 2003 and is part of the network of centers for public health preparedness funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

UMDNJ is the nation's largest free-standing public health sciences university with more than 5,500 students attending the state's three medical schools, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions, a school of nursing and its only school of public health, on five campuses. Last year, there were more than two million patient visits to UMDNJ facilities and faculty at campuses in Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Scotch Plains, Camden and Stratford. UMDNJ operates University Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center in Newark, and University Behavioral HealthCare, a mental health and addiction services network.
