UMDNJ Board of Trustees Names Dr. Bruce C. Vladeck Interim President
NEWARK—The Board of Trustees at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey voted unanimously today to appoint Dr. Bruce C. Vladeck as interim president.
"We are confident that Bruce Vladeck is the person who will help lead UMDNJ through the challenges we are facing with vision and integrity," said Acting Board Chair Eric Pennington. "Today this institution, which means so much to so many, turns a corner. Let us get to work."
Dr. Vladeck, a nationally recognized health care expert, is currently a principal at Ernst and young, LLP in New York City, where his is Senior Health Policy Advisor and the East Coast Director for the firm’s Academic Medical Center service line. From 1993 to 1997, he served as administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration, where he directed the Medicare and Medicaid program.
"I am pleased and honored to have been appointed by the University's Trustees. I won't minimize the problems facing UMDNJ, but it is a great institution, with potential to become a preeminent one," Dr. Vladeck said. "I look forward to working with the thousands of committed trustees, faculty, administration, staff and students and ask for their support and guidance as we go forward together."
Dr. Vladeck is a former professor of Health Policy and Geriatrics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He is a member of the New York City Board of Health, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Primary Care Development Corporation, a Trustee of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, and a member of the Editorial Board of Health Affairs.
The board, which included newly sworn-in member Anthony P. Terracciano, voted unanimously to approve the 6-month contract. Dr. Vladeck will paid at an annual rate of $525,000.
Before joining HCFA, Dr. Vladeck was President of the United Hospital Fund of New York for 10 years. He has held positions on the faculty of Columbia University and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; from 1979 to 1982 he was Assistant Commissioner for Health Planning and Resources Development of the New Jersey Department of Health. He received his BA, magna cum laude, from Harvard College; and an MA and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Vladeck is 56 and resides in New York City.
