Two Wheels Used to Help Gain Ground in the Fight Against Cancer
Second Annual Century for the Cure Bike Ride Raises Over $50,000

NEW BRUNSWICK — In 1997, Scott Glickman of Warren was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a disease that affects more than 50,000 Americans each year, killing half.

While undergoing extensive chemotherapy, he made it a goal to recover to a point where he would be able to participate in the 200 mile, 2-day Pan Mass Challenge Bike Ride that he had done for years with friends Scott Dight and Richard Bernstein. He reached his goal and rode in 1999. After doing the Pan Mass event for five more years, Scott decided that it was time to bring their efforts closer to home and give back to the institution that was so instrumental to his recovery – The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ).

Last year, Scott Glickman along with his friends Scott Dight and Richard Bernstein launched the inaugural Century for the Cure Bike Ride, a 100-mile, 1-day bike tour beginning and ending in Warren’s Camp Riverbend to benefit The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. In their first year, they had 15 riders and raised $35,206. This year on September 9, 2006, 32 Cyclists from throughout New Jersey participated in the 2nd Annual Century for the Cure Bike Ride and raised $50,400 to support cutting-edge research that will advance treatments and potential cures for cancer.

“Training for and participating in the Century for the Cure Bike Ride requires a physical commitment. However, the ride itself is only a portion of what Century for the Cure is about,” stated Glickman. “For the Ride to be a success, each rider makes both a physical and financial commitment and in return, each participant is guaranteed to cross the finish line with an emotional reward, knowing that he or she has helped others and been part of an experience larger than themselves.”

“New cancer therapies are needed,” stated Roger Strair, M.D., Ph.D., Director of CINJ’s Hematologic Malignancies Program and Professor of Medicine, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “Scott’s continued commitment to the research required to develop these therapies makes us, and our patients, feel extremely proud and thankful.”
