UMDNJ Files Suit Seeking Repayment from Consultants
9/1/05—The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) filed two lawsuits today (Aug. 31) in Superior Court of Essex County, seeking restitution from two consulting firms who were engaged to perform work for the university, but for which work was not produced according to contractual agreement.
Named in the suits are Patrick H. McCarthy, who entered into an agreement with the university in 2002 to provide consulting services in connection with federal Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement issues; and International Brokerage Concepts, Inc. and the estate of Ronald White, who as president of the firm was engaged in 2001 to provide consulting services during the transition period of incoming Governor James McGreevey.
In each case, the university is citing breach of contract, breach of good faith and fair dealing, and unfair enrichment as basis for its claims.
Dr. John Petillo, president of UMDNJ said, "This action is an important step for reinforcing the university's new standards for accountability and transparency. All vendors who now do business with UMDNJ, or wish to do business with us in the future, must understand that we expect value for our dollar. We cannot and will not tolerate anything less."
