Eli
Lilly and Company and UMDNJ Sign Contract
For National
Training Program for Mental Health Professionals
Eli Lilly and Company and the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) have signed a
contract for an innovative pharmaceutical industry-university
partnership, it was announced at the institution's annual University
Day ceremony.
The contract will enable up to
150 behavioral health care agencies from across the country to
participate in a comprehensive training program, called Partners
for Excellence in Psychiatry: Neuroscience Treatment Team Partner
(NTTP) Training Program.
The Partners for Excellence in
Psychiatry training program is a collaborative effort of UMDNJ-University
Behavioral HealthCare and Eli Lilly and Company. NTTP is a component
of the partnership and is focused on teaching behavioral health
professionals new psychosocial and diagnostic treatment approaches
to help people with mental illness lead healthier lifestyles.
Jack Jordan, director of marketing for the neuroscience specialty
business unit for the Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical company,
told University officials of the company's decision on the contract
during University Day ceremonies at UMDNJ's Newark campus.
Dr. Cook, UMDNJ president, presented
a presidential citation for corporate leadership to Eli Lilly
and Company in recognition of the company's "outstanding contributions
to behavioral health through its commitment to education and training
of the health care professionals."
"Eli Lilly's selection of UMDNJ
for this partnership is a very proud moment for all of us affiliated
with the University," Dr. Cook said, "and is a testament to the
level of excellence in University Behavioral HealthCare's initiatives
in research, teaching and patient care."
Mr. Christopher Kosseff, president
and chief executive officer of UMDNJ-University Behavioral HealthCare,
said, "The collaboration with Eli Lilly is helping to establish
a partnership with behavioral care organizations across the country,
creating a common mission of advancing psychiatric care beyond
symptom-reduction and further enhancing lives of patients suffering
from serious and persistent mental illness."
The vision of the partnership is
to establish national leadership in defining programmatic structures
for serving psychiatric populations. The program's mission is
to raise the standard of care for people with serious and persistent
mental illness by establishing Eli Lilly and Company's NTTP program
as a best practice utilized by behavioral health care agencies
across the nation. The NTTP training program provides comprehensive
instruction designed to help patients and their families understand
mental illness and its treatment. The content is not specific
to diagnosis or medication.
The Partners For Excellence in
Psychiatry Program includes the three components:
- Team Solutions, a program which
educates people with mental illness and family members about
symptoms about mental illness and what they can do to promote
recovery and prevent relapse;
- Solutions for Wellness, a program
that offers information and tips on healthy living including
nutrition, fitness, and exercise; and
- Abnormal Involuntary Movement
Scale (Aims), a program that describes the systematic rating
tool designed to document the motor symptoms associated with
abnormal involuntary movement disorders such as tardive dyskenesia.
The Partners For Excellence In
Psychiatry training program also includes several other components
including lectures presenting the most current information on
causes and treatment of major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia;
specialized teaching strategies to help professionals work with
individuals with conditions with deficits in attention; and consultation
services to help agencies custom-tailor NTTP to their organization.
