The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) had its origin as a
Program in Biomedical Sciences in the former Seton Hall College of Medicine
and Dentistry, which was established in 1956. In 1965, the State of New
Jersey consolidated medical and dental education and the GSBS became a
separate school of the State's Health Sciences University. In 1969, GSBS,
along with the New Jersey Medical and Dental Schools moved to its present
facilities in Newark.
Today, the Newark campus of GSBS is part of the University of Medicine and
Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and has over 270 graduate students taking
courses and performing research in pursuit of the Ph.D. and M.S. degrees.
Our graduate students attend classes and work in labs in a supportive,
vibrant, intellectual environment. Our student population reflects the
ethnic diversity of our geographic area, leading one of our students to
comment, "I love going to school here, no one is a minority!"
GSBS-Newark is proud of its student body, its research faculty and its
educational programs. Educationally, we offer a variety of courses ranging
from Cell and Molecular Biology to Stem Cell Biology and Applications to
Molecular Medicine, Weapons of Mass Destruction and The Business of Science.
Students work in modern well-equipped laboratories exploring critical
biomedical research issues with enthusiastic faculty, committed to both
basic and translational research. Our graduates are accomplished scientists
who have obtained positions in academics, education, science writing and in
pharmaceutical/biotech companies throughout the country.
We are especially interested in attracting talented students to our Ph.D.
program. Training Programs are available in a variety of biomedical research
areas within the Newark campus of UMDNJ. Joint programs with Rutgers
(Integrative Neuroscience) and NJIT (Biomedical Engineering) are also
available for those interested in furthering their education in the
sciences. The successful Ph.D. candidate can expect to receive a stipend of
at least $24,000/year, tuition remission and paid health insurance. Housing
is available on campus, in the immediate vicinity of the campus and in
suburbs a few miles from the University.
I invite you to explore our website and get to know more about us, our
programs and our goals. If you are a prospective student and have questions
about our educational and research programs please contact me, one of our
faculty or administrative staff directly. If you want to find out more about
student life, contact one of our students.
