Student Profiles

Our PhD students come from a variety of educational backgrounds, but have in common a love for research and a desire to make scientific discovery part of their career goals. This page will focus on one of our current students, indicating where they come from, what they're working on and what their specific goals are. We urge you to email these students or any of our other students to find out more about student life and academic goals to help you decide if GSBS-Newark is the right choice for you.

Mellisa Baralt : I attended Montclair State University, where I received my bachelor’s degree in biology in 2001. Once I received my B.S, I was introduced to the Bridges Program for minorities which allowed me to further my studies and receive a Master’s Degree from MSU and UMDNJ. Once in the Master’s Program, I began a rotation in the laboratory of Dr. Muriel Lambert. This rotation led to my interest in DNA damage and repair. I am currently working on my PhD thesis project in this lab. My work focuses on the interactions between some of the proteins involved in DNA repair pathways, in particular the Fanconi anemia pathway and its related proteins. I am also the President of the Graduate Student Association and am eager to work with incoming students. Please feel free to email me regarding any information that may be of assistance to you. Thank You and I look forward to hearing from you... Melissa

Krista D. Buono: I graduated in 2001 from Loyola College in Maryland with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry. I went on to pursue my interest in biomedical research, working at the National Institutes of Health in the Institute of Diabetes, Digestive & Kidney Diseases from January 2002 to August 2005. While at NIH, I realized my passion for biomedical research and knew I wanted to further my education. UMDNJ-Newark was a perfect match for me because I was undecided which avenue of biomedical research I wanted to pursue. However, I did know that I was extremely interested in stem cell research, and that I wanted to gain research opportunity with a pharmaceutical company. I was accepted into the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Program. Currently, I am doing rotations in labs that are working on stem cell research while this summer I will experience research at a pharmaceutical company. I am the President of the Student Society for Stem Cell Research UMDNJ-Newark Chapter. Our goals are to educate to eliminate previous misconceptions and to advance scientific research for cures. I am also the GSA Vice President of Internships and Career Affairs.

I know the decision to go to graduate school is a new challenging adventure in one’s life. I want you to know, I would be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have! Best Wishes… Krista
