REGIONAL GROSS ANATOMY - 2007

The Department of Cell Biology & Molecular Medicine is very pleased to welcome you to its laboratories.  The comments below are designed to ease your entrance into this study.  We are your friends and guides and look forward to a pleasant relationship with you.

READING ASSIGNMENTS:
The required books listed below along with material handed out in class, are the ultimate sources of test material.

LABORATORY SESSIONS: (5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursdays starting on January 25, 2005)

The laboratory is the place to learn Gross Anatomy.  If a student makes full use of the laboratory experience, the amount of time needed for home study will be considerably reduced.  THE MATERIAL COVERED IN YOUR DISSECTION MANUAL REPRESENTS AN OUTLINE OF THE COURSE.  Your dissection manual, atlas, and laboratory dissection schedule MUST always accompany you to each laboratory session.  Students are advised to read ahead of the scheduled laboratory session and review as much as possible.  The course is very dense; it is not possible to “cram” before an exam to compensate for not keeping up throughout the course.

Attendance at each scheduled laboratory is MANDATORY and will be MONITORED, and each student is expected to participate each day in the assigned dissection. It is also expected that each student will be present throughout the scheduled laboratory period. Students who need to be absent for all or part of the laboratory period must notify the instructor and obtain prior approval from the Course Director. Students may visit other dissection tables to review dissection only at the end of the day. Please be aware that irregular laboratory attendance and lack of participation in the dissection will affect your final course grade.

1.  Preview of dissection videos before the sessions is required.  To do so access:

                           http://anatomy.med.umich.edu

                                highlight Dissection Videos

select video as per the Laboratory Guide

NOTE: the videos illustrate techniques of dissection BUT present more structural detail than is required to complete the assigned dissections

Reading your laboratory manual before the session will result in the efficient use of your time in the laboratory.  A purposeful approach to dissection will enable you to indicate to the Instructors the structures you are seeking to discover, as well as their location and relationships.  The team approach recommended is characterized by rotating dissectors and readers.  Because of the variability in human anatomy, cadavers at other tables should also be observed.  The laboratory is an ideal setting to obtain clarification about the subject matter that may be giving you difficulty.  The Instructors are happy to assist you with any difficulties you may encounter; however, they will not dissect for you.  In the dissecting rooms, a laboratory coat and dissecting kits are mandatory

a. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES may either cadaver material, Bones or models, BE PERMITTED TO LEAVE THE LABORATORY.

b. Keeping the specimen wet is essential.  Cover the specimen properly at the end of each session with water-moistened towels.  Close cadaver vaults before leaving the lab.

c. Please keep the noise level down.  No one can concentrate in an atmosphere of confusion.

d. The laboratories are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except for the few hours (our set-up time) immediately preceding and during practical examinations.  Take advantage of this time for study and review.

e.  No photographs may be taken in the laboratory.

f.  All tissue scraps are to be placed in the red bag in each vault; all cadavers are to have all parts remain together - in most cases they will be cremated after your course is over and returned to their families.

g. Only UMDNJ students who are registered in the anatomy course are permitted in the gross laboratory.  Special permission must be obtained if you have visitors who wish to see the laboratory.

Five students are assigned to each table.  A copy of the dissector and an atlas MUST be present at each anatomy table at each session.

Attendance at all lecture and laboratory sessions is MANDATORY. If the University cancels classes because of weather, you are still responsible for the missing day’s assignments.  Use the time at home to study the day’s readings; make up for missing dissection time during your free hours as soon as possible.

RULES FOR SURVIVAL:

  • NEVER FALL BEHIND!
  • AFTER YOU HAVE STUDIED ALONE-ALWAYS STUDY WITH FRIENDS.
  • PARTICIPATE IN STUDY GROUPS.
  • READ THE LAB MANUAL THE NIGHT BEFORE EACH LAB SESSION.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

Clinically Oriented Anatomy, Moore & Dalley (5th ed), Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins.
If you use this textbook, there is no need to buy a separate atlas (saves money).

Printing Instructions:
When printing PDF presentations it is sometimes advantageous to print in grayscale to conserve color ink. Also, when printing, one can choose to print multiple slides on a single page. To do so, when printing, select the "Properties" button, then select the "Finishing" tab. Under "Document Options" the number of pages per sheet is configured.
