THE GRADUATE SCHOOL of BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES at NEWARK.
The Newark Campus of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) is located on a 50-acre site in the University Heights section of Newark. More than 650 full-time faculty members are present on the UMDNJ campus, which is shared by five professional schools.

Paterson HS students, Javier, Naznin and Christine, who participated in the Dorothy Dillahunt Memorial Scholarship Research Program (link) last summer posing with students and faculty from GSBS-Newark.

Students presented the results of their research to family, students, staff and members of the Paterson Board of Education at Harms Academy in Paterson.

Victoria Cotero - was recently awarded an NIH predoctoral NRSA fellowship entitled: Hormonal control of arcuate nutrient sensing neurons. This award pays her stipend and additional expenses for three years.

Gina Conforti, PhD candidate in the laboratory of Dr Vivian Bellofatto (Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics) has been awarded a New Jersey Technology Fellowship of $75,000 for postdoctoral study in partnership with the Pestka Biomedical Laboratories in Piscataway.

Jan 2008 Mili Mandal, a predoctoral student in Dr. Nicholas Ponzio’s Laboratory, was just awarded a 2-year fellowship from Autism Speaks, a national funding organization that supports autism research. Ms. Mandal’s research project will investigate the influence of the immune system on development of autism.

The 2004 GSBS recipients of the Morris Schaffer Endowed Scholarship award were Helen Genova, Ph.D. student in the Integrative Neuroscience program, and Olga Chernysh, Ph.D. student in the Pharmacology and Physiology program.  Both students will receive a monetary award of $650 each.

10/10/04 Dr. Carlos Molina, Assistant Professor, Ob/GYN and Biochemistry, is representing the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the upcoming Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students in Texas from November 10-13, 2004.  Luis Muniz, Ph.D. student in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program will also be attending with Dr. Molina.

GSBS students Wafaa Elsayed, Ph.D. student in the Pharmacology and Physiology program and Katarzyna Trzaska, Ph.D. student in the Interdisciplinary program, were two of the recipients of the Robert Talley Scholarship.  The Robert Talley Dinner Dance was held on Friday, October 22, 2004 at the Friar Tuck Inn, in Cedar Grove, New Jersey.

Dr. Gerald Voelbel received funding for his F32 from NINDS grant. The grant is entitled "Functional near infrared spectroscopy of mild TBI".

Steve Greco, a PhD candidate in the laboratory of Dr Pranela Rameshwar, has been selected to participate in the NIH Graduate Student Research Festival on October 12-13, 2006.

Kyla Driscoll, a PhD candidate in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics has been awarded a prestigious "Graduate Merit Award" from the Executive Women Of New Jersey, an organization that recognizes the accomplishments of women pursuing higher graduate degrees.

Public Education and Outreach  

Dr. Pranela Rameshwar and students from her lab recently visited Weequahic High School in Newark to talk about their work on stem cells.
