Need for the Program

Management in the biotechnology industry, especially in the area of marketing and risk assessment, requires an understanding of the foundations of biomedical research. The pharmaceutical industry, for example, follows a team approach to the investigatory process of drug discovery, and the need to understand these principles is becoming increasingly important in all aspects of management As these organizations continue to expand and enter new product areas, managers require new skills to negotiate rapid and complex changes in financing, marketing and organizational structure. The need to communicate with both the scientific and administrative teams is critical to assess changing and often highly competitive markets. The combined scientific and business skills taught in this dual degree program are necessary for managers to determine the best strategic direction for a biotechnology/pharmaceutical company or department.

The dual-degree program will allow students to complete their formal education at a faster pace while permitting specialization and a definitive focus on these specific industries. This industry-focused education would better suit the students' needs and help them to reach their short and long-term goals much more efficiently than separate, generalized degrees ever could. It will therefore better prepare graduates for the career opportunities that lie ahead. Immersion in this program will allow students to form a network of mentors and colleagues within their industry. In addition, the course work will incorporate case studies from these industries to make the classroom learning more relevant.
