CME Article - Treatment of Tuberculosis in Patients Infect with HIV: An Update

The treatment of tuberculosis (TB) in the HIV-infected patient is critical and challenging for clinicians. This article provides an overview of the latest treatment recommendations for co-infected patients, a case presentation, and teaching points from a medical and case management standpoint. Clinicians treating patients with TB and/or HIV need to know these new guidelines for diagnosis and co-management of the two illnesses, in order to effectively treat patients. This complex dual treatment may require more intensive monitoring and involvement of medical and allied health professionals, including patient counseling and education, directly observed therapy, and case management, to increase adherence and reduce resistance to medications. Continuing education credits are provided for reading this article upon completion of the evaluation and test requirements.
