Course Description and Overall Goal
This intensive two-day skills-building workshop covers the principles of adult education, teaching strategies, and planning and conducting TST training. The course includes some lecture sessions; however, the format is highly interactive with an emphasis on role-plays, group exercises, and practice teaching of course content and TST demonstration. Participant will receive feedback from experienced trainers as they practice these skills.

Who Should Attend
This workshop is designed for licensed health professionals (i.e., nurses, nurse practitioners or physician assistants) who are responsible for training others in tuberculin skin testing. Participants must be proficient in the technique of administering and reading the Mantoux tuberculin skin test and be recommended by their department head. Please attach letter of support to application.

Why Course Is Needed
Nurses in a variety of settings such as, correctional facilities, school health and college health programs, and health department TB programs are required to administer and interpret TSTs. Since accurate TST results depend on accurate administration and interpretation these nurses require specialized training. This program prepares nurse trainers to effectively train others by proving a background in adult learning principles, hands-on TST training skills, providing feedback, and presentation skills

Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe and apply the principles of adult learning to teaching the skill of tuberculin skin testing
  • Demonstrate instructional skills during a trainer-learner simulation, i.e., presenting information in lecture format, demonstrating a technical skill, and giving feedback to the learner
  • Discuss the logistics of planning a TST training
  • Select and utilize appropriate training resources
  • Describe how evaluations can be used for program improvement

Course Requirements

In order to meet the course objectives, individuals should attend the entire course, participate in individual and group exercises, complete the program evaluation form at the end of the course, and a post-course follow up evaluation within 6 months of the course
