Course Description
The management of patients infected with M. tuberculosis in the presence of an immunocompromising condition can be complicated and challenging. This web-based seminar will specifically cover screening, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients who are taking anti-tumor necrosis factor agents (TNF-alpha inhibitors). The seminar will consist of an overview of the interaction between TNF-alpha inhibitors and TB infection and disease and review the latest CDC recommendations for physicians prescribing these agents as well as for physicians diagnosing and treating TB in patients already taking TNF-alpha inhibitors. Case presentations will be included along with time for discussion.

Target Audience
Physicians and other health care professionals who manage patients with co-morbidities that may lead to treatment with TNF-alpha inhibitors and/or patients with TB infection or disease.

Objectives

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Determine the role of immunosuppressive therapies in the course of infection with TB in order better diagnose and treat TB patients with a condition requiring treatment with TNF-alpha inhibitors.
  • Utilize CDC recommendations for screening, diagnosis, and treatment of latent TB infection and TB disease in patients taking TNF-alpha inhibitors in order to avoid development of complications related to the development of TB in those infected and the cure of active TB disease.
  • Apply lessons learned from reviewing TB treatment challenges when managing patients taking TNF-alpha inhibitors to avoid diagnostic and treatment failures.
