Program Description
The risk of TB transmission is high in settings such as emergency departments where care may be provided to patients before they are diagnosed with TB disease. This web-based seminar is intended to discuss the typical presentation of TB patients in the emergency department and outline the steps necessary to reduce missed opportunities for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. The seminar will also cover administrative, environmental, and respiratory protection control measures with the goal of improving infection control practices in emergency department settings.

Statement of Need
Educational activities related to tuberculosis are rarely directed at emergency department personnel, one setting where patients with TB disease frequently seek care. Cases of delayed and missed diagnoses of TB in emergency department settings have been reported by providers and observed in retrospective reviews. An educational program is needed to promptly identify suspected TB cases in the emergency department setting, implement appropriate infection control measures, and encourage effective collaborations between hospital emergency departments and the TB control programs in their jurisdiction.

Target Audience
Emergency department healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, and infection control practitioners, as well as public health staff who may be interested in developing strategies for working collaboratively with these professionals.

Objectives

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the typical presentation of suspected TB patients in the emergency department in order to more rapidly recognize infectious patients and provide appropriate management
  • Identify and employ appropriate diagnostic and treatment methods for TB in emergency department settings in order to provide effective cure of TB disease
  • Describe and apply personal respiratory protection and administrative infection control procedures in emergency departments in order to prevent transmission of M. tuberculosis
  • Apply programmatic strategies to develop collaborative relationships between TB control programs and hospital emergency departments to reduce missed opportunities for appropriate treatment of TB patients
