Course Description and Overall Goal
This seminar will explore the health factors that coexist with tuberculosis among homeless persons, as well as successful strategies for the prevention and control of tuberculosis among homeless persons in the US. In particular, it will elucidate the partnership between health departments and agencies that serve the homeless to improve the coordination of clinical care and contact investigation outcomes. The format will include an overview of the situation, the perspective of shelter staff, and a case study of collaboration between a local health department, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and homeless services providers.

Who Should Attend
This web-based seminar is appropriate for both TB control staff and staff of homeless shelters and other agencies serving the homeless population.

Why Course Is Needed
Homeless persons suffer disproportionately from a variety of health problems, including tuberculosis. There is increased risk for TB transmission in shelters and other housing facilities for the homeless, especially in situations of crowding and poor ventilation. Detecting, treating and preventing TB in this population will benefit not only individual patients but also the communities in which they reside. Health departments and agencies that provide services for the homeless should collaborate to implement TB prevention and control activities.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity participants will be able to:

  • Describe the extent of homelessness as a social problem in the US
  • Discuss the burden of TB among the homeless population
  • Outline effective strategies for prevention and treatment of TB among homeless persons and their contacts
  • Discuss how health departments and homeless services agencies can work as partners to coordinate clinical care and contact investigations to effectively prevent TB

Registration priority will be given to individuals within the Northeastern Region, including Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia, and the cities of Baltimore, Detroit, New York City, and Philadelphia.

There is no limit to the number of participants at one location viewing from one room and computer. However, each site must identify a contact person to receive conference information, submit the sign-in sheet, and share the link to the online conference evaluation after the seminar.

Notification of acceptance and additional information will be sent via email. Please be sure to provide a valid email address on the registration form.
