Course Description and Overall Goal
This seminar will explore issues around HIV screening in TB clinics, including barriers to provider-initiated HIV testing, successful strategies to improve screening rates, and interventions for strengthening TB-HIV collaborations. The format will include an overview of the CDC's recommendations, perspectives and experiences of TB programs, and a case study.

Who Should Attend
This web-based seminar is designed for TB program staff and other health care providers who diagnose, treat and manage TB patients.

Why Course Is Needed
HIV infection is the most important risk factor for progression from latent TB infection to TB disease. Progression to TB disease is often rapid, mortality is higher and cure rates of TB are lower in HIV-infected individuals. HIV infection also alters the clinical course of TB disease making diagnosis more difficult as immunosuppression progresses and complicating the medical management of TB. Routine testing can help to reduce stigma associated with testing and early HIV diagnosis can lead to improved health outcomes for TB patients. HIV screening is recommended as part of standard clinical care for all TB suspects, contacts and cases.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity participants will be able to:

  • Describe the current CDC recommendations for HIV screening of TB patients
  • List the barriers TB programs face in providing HIV screening to TB patients
  • Outline effective strategies to increase HIV screening in TB programs
  • Explain how TB and HIV programs can collaborate to improve prevention and treatment services for patients

Registration priority will be given to individuals within the Northeastern Region, including Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia, and the cities of Baltimore, Detroit, New York City, and Philadelphia.

There is no limit to the number of participants at one location viewing from one room and computer. However, each site must identify a contact person to receive conference information, submit the sign-in sheet, and share the link to the online conference evaluation after the seminar.

Notification of acceptance and additional information including a link to handouts will be sent via email a few days before the webinar. Please provide a valid email address on the registration form.
