This interactive workshop, consisting of three live web-based sessions, with accompanying pre-recorded lectures for advance viewing, is designed to enhance the managerial skills of new and seasoned TB managers and supervisors. It utilizes a combination of live web-based lectures and pre-recorded lecture which can be viewed at the participant’s convenience. Participants must be able to attend all sessions and view pre-recorded lectures in advance of the related course dates.

Entry level and mid-level managers and experienced supervisors in TB control programs.

At the conclusion of this activity the target audience will be able to:

• Apply TB surveillance data to program management and evaluation in order to improve patient and program objectives
• Apply principles of TB case management services to improve patient adherence and continuity of care
• Describe laboratory techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of TB in order to adjust medication regimens and appropriately treat TB patients and contacts
• Use genotyping results to identify false-positive cultures, distinguish between re-activation and re-infection and identify outbreaks in order to focus and prioritize TB control efforts
• Apply principles of TB transmission to facility management and supervision of contact investigations so that the spread of TB to the greater community may be prevented
• Define cultural competency in the context of TB programs so that staff may engage TB patients in a sensitive, individualized manner
• Evaluate aspects of a TB program in order to improve quality and outcomes which are defined by state and local standards of care
• Fill gaps in standards of care through tailored training activities in order to improve patient outcomes

Enrollment is limited to supervisors and managers of TB control program activities.  Participants must be familiar with basic concepts about tuberculosis disease and infection, as outlined in the CDC Self-Study Modules on Tuberculosis prior to attendance at this course.  This course will not cover fundamental TB concepts nor clinical issues related to TB.  Your supervisor will be contacted to attest to your basic TB knowledge, role and responsibilities, and ability to complete all course activities.

This course will be conducted as three, 2-hour sessions occurring over three weeks with recordings to be viewed in advance of those days.  In order to apply for this course, participants must be available for all three live dates and must view recorded lectures by the due dates.  Course certificates will only be issued if these requirements are fulfilled.

Technical requirements:

• Access to high-speed Internet
• Telephone for participation in live, web-based sessions (February 7, 4, & 22, 2011)
• Computer with speakers or headset to hear the audio for pre-recorded sessions

Registration priority will be given to individuals within the Northeastern Region, including Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia, and the cities of Baltimore, Detroit, New York City, and Philadelphia. Others will be put on a waiting list pending approval of their TB regional training and medical consultation center.

Course is a combination of recorded and live lectures all done via the Internet.  Mandatory pre-course activities must be completed prior to the live course dates to which they pertain.
