The purpose of this training is to provide clinicians with comprehensive information on the management and treatment of TB. Topics will include epidemiology, transmission & pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of TB, TB in children and adolescents, multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, TB/HIV co-infection, surgical treatment of TB, infection control, and key aspects of patient management.  The format includes lectures, discussions, small group work and case studies.

This workshop is designed for physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals who are involved in the management of patients with TB, supervise those who provide care for TB patients, or are TB control staff responsible for program management.

Individuals who work in the following settings would benefit from attending this workshop:

• Immigrant & Refugee Health
• Community Health Settings
• College or University Health Services

As the incidence of tuberculosis continues to decline, maintaining clinical and public health expertise in TB is particularly challenging. Therefore, ongoing training and education are important for healthcare providers so they can develop and enhance skills in the diagnosis of TB, follow recommended treatment guidelines, and interact effectively with public health agencies. This type of training is also important for new clinicians working in TB control or other settings.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Interpret the global, national, and local epidemiology of TB to better screen and treat groups that are at high risk for TB.
• Apply current recommendations for diagnosing and treating latent TB infection and TB disease to prevent transmission and primary drug resistance.
• Apply current standards of practice in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of TB in children to ensure successful outcomes.
• Manage medication side effects in TB patients in order to decrease the risk of toxicity and ensure completion of therapy.
• Monitor response to treatment for patients with drug resistant disease and assess the need for surgical interventions to increase cure rate.
• Develop individualized behavioral and case management strategies to promote adherence in patients taking TB medications.
• Apply the fundamentals of contact investigation in assessing potential TB exposure and transmission in the community.
• Coordinate management of patients with TB-HIV co-infection to minimize drug-drug interactions and promote continuity of care.
• Identify appropriate infection control measures along the continuum of care, including inpatient care, discharge planning, and return home, which prevent transmission and future cases of TB.

In order to meet the learning objectives and receive continuing education credits, participants are required to complete a pre-test, attend the entire course, and complete an evaluation form and a post-test at the end of the course.  A post-course follow up evaluation will be sent within 2 months of the course.
