Hackensack
University Medical Center (HUMC)
Introduction: Hackensack is a great place to learn
medicine in a private hospital. You may not be doing too many procedures,
but you could always ask the residents or nurses if you are interested.
The demands on third-year students are minimal, so use your time at HUMC
wisely.
Team:
The team usually consists of a teaching attending, a senior resident, an
intern, and 1-2 third-year students. There may also be a fourth-year
medical student doing an AI.
Daily Schedule:
7-8am: Morning Work Rounds - Check vitals,
notes, labs on the patients you are following. See your patients and think
of any issues that need to be addressed to the resident. Try to write your
notes during this time. 8-9am (twice a week): Student
Morning Report - A couple of service attendings listen to students
present cases. Sometimes they give lectures in this time slot. If there is
no student morning report scheduled, students go to the residents' morning
report. 8am-12pm (varies): Attending Rounds - All service
patients are discussed and seen by the team. Please be prepared to present
if you have a service patient. Sometimes the attending teaches on a topic,
usually in his/her area of expertise. 12pm-1pm: Noon
Conference - Mandatory for residents. Optional for third years.
Frequently, a pharmaceutical company sponsors lunch. 1pm-5pm
(varies): Afternoon Work Rounds - Follow-up on any labs or
studies that the patient has had since you last saw him/her. Make sure to
include them in your now finished note. Make sure your resident/intern is
aware of the values. If you are finished with your work, ask if
you could assist the resident/intern/team in anything else that needs
to be done.
Lectures: Students have scheduled afternoon lectures
throughout the four weeks.
Call:
· Short Call - Your team takes admissions every four
days. There is no overnight call. · Long call - Your entire team
is on call every fourth night. Call begins at 8am and your residents stay
overnight. The team receives admission until 9pm when night float (i.e.
resident assigned overnight admissions) manages the rest. Each student
should pick up at least one patient and do an H&P, which is used for
the chart.
Residents'
Lounge: This is located on the 6th floor of the Main building.
There is a code to enter, so be sure to ask for it during
orientation.
Conference
Room: The 4 Link conference room is where morning report and noon
afternoon conference is held. It contains computers that can be used to
write-up any reports, check labs, access the internet, etc. |
