Country Profile:
Tanzania and Zanzibar
The FXB Center was invited, in 2005, by CDC-Tanzania on behalf of the Tanzania Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) and the Zanzibar Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to work under the direction of their prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) Units and PMTCT Technical Working Groups to provide technical assistance and support in building sustainable capacity for scale-up of PMTCT services and linkages to follow-up care for HIV-infected mothers and HIV-exposed infants. In 2008, the FXB Center opened a country office in Dar es Salaam.
Highlights of FXB Center activities and accomplishments in
Tanzania and Zanzibar
- Updates and revisions to the national PMTCT guidelines
- Development of and updates to the National PMTCT Training Package
- Development of healthcare worker job aids and support tools to strengthen linkages to follow-up care for HIV-infected mothers
- Trainings for PMTCT program managers to support comprehensive management skills and empower managers to plan and implement PMTCT programs in a consistent and sustainable manner
- Development of supervisor support tools to enhance uniformity and comprehensiveness of current PMTCT site supervision
Upcoming plans include
- Conduct refresher training for healthcare workers in Zanzibar on recent guideline updates such as use of more efficacious drug regimens, early infant diagnosis and changes in emphasis on breastfeeding
- Integrate and strengthen PMTCT and pediatric HIV content in existing provider-initiated testing and counseling guidelines, care and treatment guidelines and community-IMCI package
- Conduct needs assessment to identify models of care and best practices for:
- implementation of high quality PMTCT services, using the most efficacious PMTCT antiretroviral regimens
- managing infant follow-up and early identification of HIV, and
- linking women and infected infants to HIV care and treatment services
