National Training Curriculum for the Provision of Care and Support Services for Children Orphaned or Made Vulnerable by HIV/AIDS

– December 2008, available only in French

Haiti OVC CurriculumThe statistics are alarming: at least 5-15 children out of 100 in Haiti are orphaned after having lost one parent or both. At least 28 out of 100 are considered vulnerable. Since the earthquake on January 12, 2010, the situation of children in Haiti has become even more precarious. It's crucial that orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) receive appropriate care within their communities.

The National Training Curriculum for the Provision of Care and Support Services for Children Orphaned or Made Vulnerable by HIV/AIDS was created to train community-based workers on a variety of topics in community-centered care including: health and nutrition, psychosocial support, economic and educational support, and community mobilization. The manual focuses on the needs of all vulnerable children, whether they are vulnerable due to poverty, HIV, or natural disasters such as the recent earthquake.

The curriculum was developed with a technical advisory group made up of representatives of organizations currently working with OVC in Haiti, under the leadership of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Social Affairs. The facilitator's manual includes a section on training tips and techniques. Available for download - please click here.

Training Exchanges with Slide Sets and Related Resources

A training exchange (TE) is a forum for experts to share experiences with specific training materials and discuss lessons learned from implementation and execution. A variety of formats are utilized ranging from teleconferences to webinars. All formats allow for worldwide access with no related travel time or expense. Participants can gain familiarity and comfort with materials that they can adapt and use for their own training presentations, increasing the efficacy of developing training material. Prior to or during the TE, all presentations and related materials are available online for download. Each presentation is followed by a question and answer period during which participants provide feedback to presenters, ask questions, and discuss strategies for training with the materials.

All resources related to each training exchange — presentation slide sets, audio coverage, and related resources — are available through the links listed below.
