CANCER INSTITUTE OF NEW JERSEY EXPANSION
195 Albany Street
New Brunswick Campus

The expansion of the Cancer
Institute of New Jersey added
over 143,000 square feet of
clinical, research, and support,
space to the existing 75,000
square foot structure.
The addition includes a
Pediatric Care Facility, the
Dean and Betty Gallo Prostate
Cancer Center, the Transgenic
Animal Facility to support
research space for infusion
therapy, a pharmacy, clinical
and research labs, and support facilities. All offer patients and staff easy access to
gardens and terraces.
The six story addition was designed so that a maximum amount of exterior space is
available for the forecourt and garden. From a new double-height patient entry at
the intersection of the old and new buildings, patients move into galleries that are
organized around the court. A curved garden wall creates privacy for the patient
gallery while supporting a sculptured metal canopy which provides shelter for drop
off and waiting.
The building is a steel frame structure clad in brick. The new entry pavilion and the
social tower at the end of the addition are clad in cast stone to match the existing
entry. Building systems and technologies enhance the Cancer Institute of New
Jersey’s world class patient treatment and state of the art research. The project,
completed in 2004 received the NJBIS Good Neighbor Award.
