REGIONAL
BIOCONTAINMENT LABORATORY
University Heights Science Park
Newark Campus
The Regional
Biocontainment Laboratory will be located on New Street
between Newark and Wilsey Streets, adjacent and connected
to the existing International Center of Public Health
(ICPH). The laboratory will be a 34,720 square foot,
two story facility with a mechanical room at the penthouse
level. It will include laboratories designed and constructed
to Biosafety Level II and III standards that will
support the nation’s growing research needs
of select BSL3 agents and emerging diseases.
The facility’s
layout and design is predicated upon the submission
prepared for the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
grant funding proposal, which UMDNJ submitted in conjunction
with the Public Health Research Institute in 2003.
The new
laboratory will be located at the North facade of
the ICPH. Access to the RBL will be through the ICPH
and will share both the service yard and the main
entrance of the existing building.
The Regional Biocontainment Laboratory
will have a vital role as a major participant in the
University Heights Science Project redevelopment area.
A review of the site development projects is anticipated
by UMDNJ with both local and municipal authorities.
Construction began in September 2006 and is expected
to last until June 2008.
