Dr. Russell McIntyre, in 2007, was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus (Biomedical Ethics and Health Law) by the Board of Trustees at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) after 31 years on the full-time teaching faculty at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and where he served as the Director of Programs in Medical Humanities. He also had an appointment as Professor of Health Systems and Policy at the UMDNJ-School of Public Health and served as the Bioethicist for the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he had a Medical Staff Appointment in the Department of Medicine to provide "Consultations in Medical Ethics." He has served on the hospital's Bioethics Committee for more than 25 years. Dr. McIntyre served as Commissioner on the New Jersey State Bioethics Commission and was a Board Member on the New Jersey Health Decisions. He was appointed by the Chief Justice of the New Jersey State Supreme Court to serve on a special Task Force on Judicial Confidentiality.

Dr. McIntyre received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Wagner College; a divinity degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia; two Masters degrees from Wittenberg University, and his Doctorate in Ethics with "highest honors" from the University of Toronto.

His specialty field is medical ethics and health law. He did his post-doctoral training in this field as a Fellow in Medical Ethics at Harvard Medical School and at the Center for Law and Health Sciences at Boston University.

Previous academic appointments include: Assistant Professor of Social Ethics, The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.; Visiting Scholar in Ethics, Harvard Divinity School; and Research Fellow in Preventive and Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School. He has also held positions while on sabbatical leave as Visiting Professor, Centre for Health Law and Ethics, Kings College Law School, London, England, and as Visiting Scholar, Division for Health Legislation, World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland.

Dr. McIntyre provides guest lectures at the medical school and has just been selected to give the "2008 Annual Stahl Memorial Lecture in Bioethics" at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in the Spring. He continues to provide "Grand Rounds" and speciality lectures at hospitals and medical societies in the tri-state metropolitan area. For ten years, Dr. McIntyre was the Editor-In-Chief of Trends in Health Care, Law & Ethics, A Quarterly Journal of Contemporary Issues in Health Care.
