MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (MSDS) AND OTHER CHEMICAL SAFETY RESOURCES
When working with chemicals or hazardous substances, it is important for personnel to be familiar with the associated hazards and to take necessary precautions. UMDNJ has implemented a Hazard Communication Program, as required by NJ PEOSH to ensure that personnel are informed about hazardous materials on the job. Chemicals inventory lists and other information are posted on the Environmental Management page of the EOHSS website.
Chemical safety information is available on the label of containers, on safety information documents, known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and in health and safety training.
Online Material Safety Data Sheets are posted below. New Jersey Hazardous Substance Fact Sheets also provide safety information on specific chemicals. Additionally, the National Academy of Science has developed Laboratory Chemical Safety Summaries which are provide concise critical discussions of the toxicity, flammability, reactivity, and explosibility of 88 chemicals commonly used in scientific research laboratories.
A Glossary of MSDS Terms is available. UMDNJ personnel who have questions about the hazards of the chemicals or products being used, or who are having trouble accessing a Material Safety Data Sheet should inform their supervisor or contact EOHSS for assistance.
MSDSs should be included in shipments of chemicals or products containing hazardous chemicals. UMDNJ personnel can also request a copy of a specific MSDS from the campus EOHSS office or from the vendor or manufacturer. Many MSDSs can also be obtained directly from the links listed below.
