Instructions
The UMDNJ Laboratory Safety Plan contains instructional and educational materials as well as minimum laboratory safety standards for the institution. The Laboratory Safety Plan fulfils the requirements for the Chemical Hygiene Plan, that is required by the OSHA Standard "Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories, 29 CFR 1910.1450." All laboratory personnel should be familiar with the contents of the Plan.

Originally, there was a separate Plan for each campus. In 2010, the Plans were consolidated.

Section 1C of the Plan contains fill-in-the blank text that must be completed for each laboratory.

Important: The three ring binders that contain the Laboratory Safety Plan are not being kept up-to-date. A notice which indicates that the Lab Safety Plan is not being kept up-to-date and which contains the URL address of the online Plan should be inserted into the first page of the binder.

Changes To The Laboratory Safety Plan That Were Not Included in the Original Binders
There will be an announcement in Benchsmart, as well as email announcements when there are changes/updates to the Laboratory Safety Plan.

April 2010	A notice should be added to the front of the binder instructing that all sections except the notice and Section 1C (fill-in-the blank survey) should be removed.	The Lab Safety Plan binders are no longer being kept up-to-date. The notice should be inserted inserted so that people know to refer to the online version.
April 2010	Appendix M, section D5	The requirement that a laboratory chemical inventory be submitted annually to the University's Right to Know coordinator has been removed. However, laboratories must continue to maintain a chemical inventory
April 2010	Section 2.A.5 Laboratory Specific Training and reference to this section in Appendix M, Personnel Responsibilities	Provides clarification that the faculty member with assigned laboratory space is responsible for ensuring that lab personnel are trained and understand the hazards and safe work practices for laboratory materials and equipment.
April 2010	Section 3P, Pyrophoric and Reactive Chemicals and Section 4I, Additional Precautions for Pyrophoric and Reactive Chemicals	Training and other safety measures, detailed in a written standard operational procedure must be implemented for work with Pyrophoric and Reactive Chemials
April 2010	Section 3T, Packing and Moving Chemicals During Lab Moves or Other Occassions and Moving Hazardous Materials, Appendix F, UMDNJ Protocol for Vacating a Laboratory	Specifies the procedure to be used for packing and moving chemicals, based on the quantity and properties of the chemicals.
April 2010	Appendix J and Appendix K provide url addresses of applicable forms insead of containing sample forms. Section 8, Medical Surveillance, was updated to include current information about Employee and Student Health Services on each campus.	The campus-specific Plans were combined into one University-wide Plan.
