HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING FOR
FACULTY, STAFF, STUDENTS AND OTHERS WORKING IN A UMDNJ LABORATORY
Below you will find the regularly schedule training programs offered to personnel working in clinical and research laboratories. Every person working in a laboratory is required to attend Laboratory Safety Training. The remaining courses are open to any interested person, but are mandatory for the staff members designated in the first column. Training on other topics including Respiratory Protection, Ergonomics, and other hazard-specific training can be scheduled by contacting EOHSS at 5-4058.

Bloodborne Pathogens/Biosafety Training for Laboratory Personnel
Personnel have the option of completing Laboratory Bloodborne Pathogens/Biosafety training online or attending classroom style training, which is held during the last hour of Initial Laboratory Safety Training. (See schedule) |

Personnel working in a UMDNJ facility who package or complete paper-work for shipments containing infectious materials, biological substances, genetically modified microorganisms and/or dry ice via Federal Express or other delivery service (e.g., US Postal Service). |

Classroom sessions are offered for both initial and refresher training (see schedule). |
Every other year
Staff must register to attend a classroom session prior to preparing packages/ paperwork.

Hazardous Waste Coordinator Training
Hazardous Waste Coordinator is not a formal title. It applies to personnel who ensure that hazardous waste is managed and stored appopriately for the lab. The person's name should be listed in section 1 part 3 of the Laborator Safety Plan.

Respirator wearers, includes Personnel who may wear respirators for protection against TB, other airborne pathogens, animal allergens or other hazardous materials.

Respiratory Protection Training and Fit-testing |
Annually.
RWJ Medical Group arranges for house-staff respirator training and fit-testing annually. EOHSS conducts fit-testing and training for personnel who wear respirators in RWJMS facilities.

Fire Warden and Buddy Training

Initial Laboratory Safety Training (Top)
Laboratory Safety Training is required within 30-days of starting work in the laboratory and every other year thereafter for UMDNJ employees, students and volunteers who will work in a UMDNJ.
Initial Laboratory Safety Training is conducted in a workshop setting.
All Laboratory Safety Training sessions include the following topics: Laboratory Safety, Hazardous Waste Management, Personal Protective Equipment, Fire Safety, Formaldehyde Awareness and Hazard Communication/Right-to-Know. Bloodborne Pathogens/Biosafety training is covered during the last hour of Initial Laboratory Safety Training.

Shipping Biological Materials, Recombinant DNA And Dry Ice
to Comply with IATA Requirements (Top)
All personnel who prepare shipping documentation, mark and label packages, fill packages or supervise transport of packages containing infectious materials, patient specimens, dry ice or genetically modified microorganisms via U.S. Postal Service, Fed Ex, or other carriers must complete training every other year. The training covers the critical issues listed below as well as updates to the requirements:
- Are you using the triple-packaging standard for packing?
- Are your shipping containers properly labeled according to IATA, DOT and/or USPS regulations?
- How long do you maintain files when shipping a hazardous material?
- Are you selecting the correct containers for shipping hazardous material?
- Do you have a current training certificate permitting you to ship hazardous materials?

Hazardous Waste Manager Training (Top)
This training is incorporated into initial and refresher Laboratory Safety Training which is required every other year. On the off-years an online Hazardous Waste training module shoud be completed.
Respiratory Protection Training and Fit-testing (Top)
Both respiratory protection training and fit-testing is required annually for personnel who wear respirators on the job. An online module is available for personnel who wear N95s for protection against TB and other airborne infectious agents in a clinical setting. Fire Warden and Buddy Training (Top)
This training is for fire wardens and buddies and their back-ups. It focuses on evacuation of building occupants during emergency conditions. It also includes fire prevention, fire extinguisher use and hazards of fire fighting. EOHSS works with the building emergency coordinator to schedule drills for each building. Fire evacuation drills are conducted quarterly for each shift for in-patient healthcare and residential facilities, quarterly for all laboratory occupancies and buildings that are seven stories or higher and twice a year for all other facilities including out-patient clinics and administrative buildings.

Hazard-specific Training (Top)
Arranged with EOHSS for personnel who are potentially exposed to a specific hazard (e.g., noise, heavy lifting) or need training in a sepcific topic such as ergonomics. |
