GUIDELINES
FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF
DEPARTMENT-SPECIFIC
SAFETY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
1.
ALL Departments must have department-specific safety
policies and procedures to address the physical environment and
activities conducted within their area.
2.
Attached are “General Safety Procedures for University Hospital”.
Please use this document as a basis for the development of your
departmental safety policies and procedures. If these procedures
address most of the needs of your department, then only minor modifications
to the overall policy need to be addressed.
3.
Departmental safety policies and procedures are particularly necessary
for areas in which high risk activities occur and/or there are particular
hazards associated with the tasks performed.
4.
Safety policies and procedures are considered to be those actions
taken to prevent or reduce the risk of injury while performing
work within the Department.
5.
Please assess the hazards involved with work and tasks performed
in your area and forward those safety policies and procedures for:
·
Departments that provide direct patient care activities that might
result in injury in areas such as in-patient units, out-patient
programs, nursing, etc.
·
Departments working with special and/or HAZARDOUS EQUIPMENT
, (Environmental Services, Laboratories, Clinical Engineering, Food
and Nutrition, Physical Plant, Nuclear Medicine, Emergency Medical
Services, Central Sterile Supply, etc.)
·
Departments working with HAZARDOUS MATERIALS & WASTE
including hazardous chemicals, anti-neoplastic drugs, infectious
materials and radioactive materials (e.g., Laboratories, Pharmacy,
Environmental Services, Physical Plant, Nuclear Medicine, Central
Sterile Supply, etc.)
