Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What safety training do I need and how often?

  2. Who should I call when my office is too hot or cold?

You should call the Physical Plant work control center at 2-5400. They will send a technician to your office to check humidity levels, temperature, and carbon dioxide concentrations and then make adjustments to your ventilation as necessary.

  3. What am I supposed to do during a disaster?

  4. Each department/unit has a department/unit specific disaster plan. You will receive annual training on this plan by your supervisor and/or manager, which will explain your role during a disaster.

  5. What should I do if I see someone smoking in the Hospital?

  6. Inform them in a pleasant manner that we are a smoke-free facility. If you see an employee smoking, get their name and report it immediately to the Hospital EOC/Safety Coordinator at 2-3358.

  7. How am I supposed to extinguish a fire with a fire extinguisher if I never actually used one before?

You should only use a fire extinguisher if you are trained and confident about using one. The department of EOHSS offers hands-on fire extinguisher training several times a year. This event is coordinated with the Newark Fire department and an outside vendor. You get to actually implement "PASS" and use a fire extinguisher on a small, controlled pan fire. Remember, "PASS" stands for "P"ull the pin, "A"im low, "S"queeze the handle, and "S"weep from side to side. The vendor has available each type of fire extinguisher that is in the Hospital. For further information on hands-on fire extinguisher training, contact EOHSS at 2-4812.

  8. Who should I call if I have a problem with a piece of Medical Equipment?

You should call Clinical Engineering at 2-6661.
