Adam Perlman, MD, MPH, FACP,
Executive Director, Associate Professor

Dr. Perlman was elected to the position of Vice Chair, November 2007, by the Steering Committee of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine at their Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.  Consortium membership currently includes 39 highly esteemed medical centers across the United States and Canada.

In September 2007, Dr. Perlman was honored to be named the new Chairperson for this Department. The move to the Department of Primary Care supports Dr. Perlman's goal to grow and expand ICAM's mission as an institute.

Dr. Perlman published an abstract which was featured in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine entitled "Massage Therapy for Osteoarthritis of the knee: Results of Randomized Controlled Trial", Perlman A, Katz D, Njike VY, Williams A-L, Sabina A. Both CW11 News and ABC Eyewitness News television stations came to the ICAM office to film an interview with Dr. Perlman and aired stories on their evening news programs. This trial, funded through the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and performed in collaboration with investigators at Yale University, was the first randomized, controlled clinical trial of massage for osteoarthritis. Articles featuring this research, many with a personal interview, appeared in: The New York Times, Andrew Weil's Newsletter, Reuters Health.com, The Star Ledger, The Randolph Reporter Newspaper, The Times Herald Record Newspaper, Womens Health Magazine, Medpage Today. The New York Times coverage was particularly significant, as the Times covers only a few medical publications per week out of the thousands that are published.

In addition, Dr. Adam Perlman is featured in the New Jersey Medical School's On the Move 2006 Annual Report. As the CAM curriculum director for NJMS, Dr. Perlman has played a vital role in integrating complementary and alternative medicine into the New Jersey Medical School. In addition to learning about different types of complementary and alternative medicine and resources for evaluating evidence-based research on efficacy of non-Western treatments, students also learn the importance of looking at the patient as a whole person, a concept that complements the school's focus on cultural competency.

Dr. Adam Perlman  co-wrote chapters in published books on complementary and alternative medicine:
"Osteoarthritis" (Chapter 61) in Integrative Medicine, V. Sukul, M. Spierer, ed. David Rake., W.B. Saunders Co., Orlando , FL. 2007:667-675.
