| Community Resource Directory Overview
As a principal liaison of the community service mission for UMDNJ, the Department of Community Affairs has compiled an inventory of programs and services provided to the University’s constituent communities in cooperation with the operating units of the University.
We are proud to report that since 1999, the date of our last review of UMDNJ’s community service mission, this institution has honored its mandate for community service statewide by providing health fairs, workshops, educational enrichment programs, clinical services, research and urban development initiatives, disease prevention and treatment programs, conferences and symposia.
Providing community services in New Jersey requires partnership and collaboration on many fronts. We take pride in UMDNJ’s ability to provide leadership and expertise in our healthcare, education, research and community service efforts. The Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities—which works closely with the community and this Department—is an example of how UMDNJ leverages its energy and resources through partnership and collaboration to find better solutions to issues that matter most. UMDNJ’s staunch commitment to make an impact on the quality of life, health and well-being of citizens of this state, is evident in both the range and strength of the programs and services you will find listed in this Resource Directory. The institution, through its schools, units and the Department of Urban and Community Development, is proactive about its mandate to be a good neighbor to our host municipalities by engaging in beneficial public health and community development activities.
In fact, the Department of Urban and Community Development has been at the forefront in promoting new avenues for positive intervention on the healthcare landscape of New Jersey. Through advocacy, the Department has assisted in the formation of the Newark Municipal Council Health Committee and the establishment of the Camden City Healthy Futures Committee, as well as maintaining the University’s relationships as part of the Council for Higher Education in Newark (CHEN). The Department helps the University serve as a positive force in the health and economic vitality in this State.
The University’s Strategic Plan for AY/FY 2006-2010 provides welcome guidance for renewing the standard of excellence expected from us all -- especially in how we serve our communities. This Resource Directory complements the Strategic Plan by helping to identify how best to apply our many resources and capabilities for community service.
This Resource Directory does more than simply document the impact UMDNJ makes on communities throughout the State. As we engage the future, UMDNJ will build on the rapport developed through the programs reported here and reinforce the University's commitment to serve its host communities by enabling the public to access healthcare and other services at UMDNJ.
As part of UMDNJ’s commitment to improving the health of those within the communities we serve, the Department of Urban and Community Development developed a web-based directory of all community programs, activities and initiatives aimed at health promotion, disease prevention, educational enrichment, neighborhood development and economic empowerment. The Community Resource Directory includes ongoing and regularly-scheduled programs and services offered by UMDNJ, its schools, departments and units to the community. This Resource Directory also provides quick, easy access to statewide programs and services offered by UMDNJ.
We in the Department of Urban and Community Development look forward to sharing this work and our progress with you. Thank you for your cooperation and all that you do to advance the University’s goals for community service.
