Participation in the political process is one of every
American's most basic rights. Federal and state laws, however,
limit the nature and extend of organizational political
participation.
UMDNJ encourages employees to participate in the American
political process if they so desire, and they may make personal
political contributions or communicate their personal beliefs
to elected officials. Federal law and UMDNJ's policy prohibits
reimbursement for personal political contributions; personal
compensation will not be altered in any way under any circumstances
to reflect such contributions.
It is important to distinguish between personal and organizational political
activities. Unless you are specifically requested by UMDNJ to represent it before
legislative or other governmental bodies, you must clearly label any personal
communication with legislators as your own and not UMDNJ's. As a responsible citizen,
UMDNJ occasionally will speak out on issues of importance to it. Senior management
is responsible for developing UMDNJ's position on relevant legislative and regulatory
issues. If legislators or regulators regarding UMDNJ's position on public issue
contact you, you should refer then to the Office of Government and Public Affairs.
