We would like to welcome you to the Student Loans Department portion of the Controller's Office Web Page.

Many of our Student Loan Borrowers might not be in a position to start making their regular payments on their Campus Based Loans which consist of the Federal Perkins Student Loans, Health Profession Student Loans, Loans for Disadvantaged Students and Primary Care Loans. To help the borrower get through this period of time, if they qualify we can grant them either an Economic Hardship Deferment or Forbearance.

ECONOMIC HARDSHIP DEFERMENT:

This deferment is only available for the Federal Perkins Loan Program. The borrower can obtain this deferment up to the maximum of three (3) years. The deferment will only be granted for one year, and the borrower would have to re-apply in subsequent years if needed. If the borrower is approved, no interest will accrue on the loan and no payments would have to be made during the deferment period. After the deferment ends, our billing servicer will send notification to the borrower to start making their regular payments.

FORBEARANCE:

Forbearance can be granted on all Campus Based Loans including the Federal Perkins Loan. The borrower can obtain forbearance up to the maximum of three (3) years. The forbearance will only be granted for one year, and the borrower would have to re-apply in subsequent years if needed. During the forbearance period the payment of principal is waived but the interest will continue to accrue on the loan and the interest must be paid either monthly or quarterly. Our billing servicer will bill the borrower accordingly. Once the forbearance period ends, our billing servicer will send notification to the borrower to start making their regular monthly payments.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS:

To assist our student loan borrowers to obtain either the Economic Hardship Deferment or the Forbearance, we are providing the application forms and letters of instruction on this Web Page. Please click on the program you want to apply for and print both pages of the appropriate application. After completion, send the signed application and the required documents to the Student Loans Office, UMDNJ-Liberty Plaza, 335 George Street, 4th Floor, New Brunswick, N.J. 08903. The borrower will be notified in writing of the Student Loans Department's decision.

Feel free to call Dianne Atwell anytime at 732-235-9181 or email her at atwelldm@umdnj.edu if you have any questions or comments.
