We would like to welcome you to the Student Loans Department portion of the Controller's Office Web Page.
Many of our Student
Loan Borrowers might not be in a position to start making their
regular payments on their Campus Based Loans which consist of
the Federal Perkins Student Loans, Health Profession Student Loans,
Loans for Disadvantaged Students and Primary Care Loans. To help
the borrower get through this period of time, if they qualify
we can grant them either a Deferment or Forbearance.
INTERNSHIP/RESIDENCY DEFERMENT:
This deferment is
available for Health Profession Loans, Loan for Disadvantaged Students, Primary Care Loan and the Robert Wood Johnson Alumni student loans. Borrowers are entitled to unlimited deferment of this loan as long as they are enrolled in an internship or residency program.
Federal Perkins Loans are not eligible for Internship/Residency deferment for medical school borrowers; however, Dental School borrowers are entitled to two (2) years of deferment. A deferment is granted on a yearly basis and borrowers must resubmit deferment forms annually. Since these loans are subsidized, no principal or interest accrues during any period of grace and deferment.
FEDERAL PERKINS STUDENT LOAN CANCELLATION AND POSTPONEMENT:
Please see the content of the Student Loan Cancellation and Postponement request form for the description of the cancellation benefits that are allowed under this program.
FORBEARANCE:
Forbearance is available on all campus based loans. The borrower can obtain Forbearance up a maximum of
three (3) years. Each approved Forbearance is granted for six (6) months. The borrower must submit a new request for Forbearance in subsequent six (6) month intervals up to a maximum of three (3) ears. During Forbearance period the payment of principal is waived but the interest will continue to accrue on the loan the borrower must pay interest monthly or quarterly. Our billing service will bill the borrower accordingly.
