NEWARK—Gary Hartwell, DDS, professor, chair, and program director of the Department of Endodontics at UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School, has been awarded the I.B. Bender Lifetime Educator award given by the American Association of Endodontists (AAE). The award, one of the organization’s highest honors, is given to educators whose contributions to endodontics have demonstrated excellence and instilled the same in their students.

"It is an honor to receive this award because there are so many outstanding educators in our specialty of endodontics,” Hartwell said. “It was humbling to read the letters of recommendation from former students and faculty members and to realize the impact my interaction with them had on their lives and careers as endodontists. To be recognized by your peers for a lifetime of work is the highest honor anyone could ever expect to receive."

An educator for 42 years, Hartwell has served in a variety of teaching positions in the military and private sector. He has been a member of the New Jersey Dental School faculty for seven years. A past president of the American Board of Endodontics and former trustee of the AAE Foundation, Hartwell is currently an AAE district director.

Hartwell resides in Montclair, N.J., during the week and in Richmond, Va., on the weekends.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) is the nation’s largest free-standing public health sciences university with nearly 5,700 students attending the state's three medical schools, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions, a school of nursing and its only school of public health, on five campuses. Annually, there are more than two million patient visits at UMDNJ facilities and faculty practices at campuses in Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Scotch Plains, Camden and Stratford. UMDNJ operates University Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center in Newark, and University Behavioral HealthCare, a statewide mental health and addiction services network.
