White Coats Greet New Jersey's Next Generation of Physicians and Dentists at UMDNJ

NEWARK, NEW BRUNSWICK AND STRATFORD, N.J. -- White coats will be the fashion item of choice this month for nearly 600 future physicians and dentists at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey�s schools in Stratford, Newark and New Brunswick. In tradition-rich ceremonies at the schools, the newest generation of physicians and dentists will receive the white lab coats on the eve of the start of their medical and dental school educations, signifying their entrance into their respective professions. Proud parents and family members will laugh, clap and shed the occasional tear as the students don the attire that symbolizes the beginning of their lifelong commitments to the care, cure and comfort of countless patients in the years ahead.

The tradition of the White Coat Ceremony was begun at Columbia University in 1993 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, and continues today at medical and dental schools across the country. The ceremony stresses the role of humanism in the practice of health care and reminds the new students that to succeed as physicians and dentists they must first truly care for the individuals who will become their patients.
