With 35+ years of CE experience, CCOE has produced thousands of educational programs for every member of the healthcare team. This body of work was made possible by CCOE’s relationships with first-rate partners and vendors and grant support from leaders in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries as well as state and federal agencies.

The following are just a few examples from our diverse portfolio of activities. The common theme throughout is an unwavering focus on solid, objective content based on real-world educational needs.

A Process of Care Model:  Evaluation and Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction

Funded through an unrestricted educational grant by Pfizer, Inc.

process of care The launch of sildenafil citrate revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction.  A clear need was identified to help prepare primary care providers to diagnose and manage erectile dysfunction in their office settings.  In one of its earliest efforts with a major external grant, CCOE took the lead in constructing a three-stage process that would ultimately produce a verified process of care model that was published and distributed to PCP's throughout the U.S.

The first step was assembling a multidisciplinary panel of ED experts from around the world at an initial Consensus Conference.  Over the course of three half-day sessions, the panel adopted an assessment and treatment algorithm.  The second step consisted of an intensive focus group discussion among family practice and internal medicine practitioners that examined the algorithm and provided specific recommendations and treatment guidelines.  The third step yielded the final management algorithm after closed deliberations by expert panel members were held to review all of the previous findings.

2006 NIMH/IAPAC International Conference on HIV Treatment Adherence

Funded multiple industry grantors, the National Institute of Mental Health, NIH-Office of AIDS Research, and the New York/ New Jersey AIDS Education and Training Center.

nimhiapacCCOE's Division of AIDS Education, founded in 1989, was among the original Ryan White-funded AIDS Education and Training Centers in the country. Continuously recognized as a leader in the field, CCOE has been called upon to organize and accredit numerous local, statewide, national and international educational activities in HIV/AIDS.

The 2006 NIMH/IAPAC International Conference on HIV Treatment Adherence provided a forum for over 350 researchers and practitioners to share their findings and experience in treatment adherence across demographic, cultural, gender, and racial perspectives. The three-day event featured scores of presentations, workshops, and roundtable discussions as well as over 170 oral and poster abstracts from around the world.

Medical Crossfire: The Alzheimer’s Disease Continuum – An Exchange of Diagnosis and Treatment Strategies

Jointly sponsored by Liberty Communications Network.  Funded through an unrestricted educational grant by Forest Laboratories.

medicalcrossfireCCOE’s ongoing relationship with Liberty Communications Network, which began in 2002, has helped that organization evolve from a being a publisher of non-peer reviewed journals to becoming one of the most recognized and respected CME entities in the field.  Through our content review and accreditation for the Medical Crossfire series of activities, CCOE ensures the highest levels of credibility, objectivity and compliance.

The Alzheimer’s Disease Continuum program began with a live roundtable forum of debate and peer exchange at the International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders.  Slides and video excerpts of that activity were subsequently utilized within 25 regional symposia throughout the country.  A monograph and video web archive were also produced from the original event.

Practical Outcomes Research

Funded by an unrestricted educational grant from Pfizer, Inc.

practicaloutcomesCCOE’s Special Initiatives division provides the expertise to handle unique opportunities that fall outside the realm of conventional continuing education activities.  The division’s track record of success is particularly noteworthy in long-term studies, survey administration, and data collection and analysis.

The Practical Outcomes Research project focused on a 21-member internal medicine group that was committed to meeting the ambitious NCQA standards regarding diabetes care.  A comprehensive chart review undertaken to measure the group’s performance against a number of standards yielded an opportunity for improvement in foot care.  An educational intervention was developed and implemented and a subsequent chart review was performed to measure the impact.   The results were submitted to the NCQA/American Diabetes Association Diabetes Physician Recognition Program and the physician group was recognized for its quality performance.

MEtabolicPulse.com

Funded through an unrestricted educational grant from sanofi aventis US.  Key vendors include Eveo, Inc. and Raskin Associates.

metabolicpulseMaximizing the use and reach of existing educational content is a key objective for CCOE and our grantors. The biggest challenge in meeting that objective is finding a delivery mechanism that is both cost-efficient and appealing to busy practitioners with varied interests and needs.

Recognizing that we had been involved in several CME activities related to diabetes that continued to have great relevance to primary care providers and other practitioners involved in the care of diabetic patients, CCOE developed MetabolicPulse.com, a diabetes information portal. The site offers practitioners access to CME activities that can be completed online or downloaded to an MP3 file or PDA.  Value and appeal is added to the online experience through the site’s other features, including up-to-the-minute news feeds, a slide set builder, interactive activities and clinical polls, and a personalization feature that allows readers to manage email alerts, save presentations, and archive CME credit statements.

Emerging Trends in Orthopaedics:
Complex Extremity Trauma

Funded by the Italian Ministry of Health, EBI, Merck-Italy, Smith & Nephew, Synthes, and Mathys Medical.

emerging trends International live conferences present significant logistical challenges, requiring high-level coordination and negotiation skills.  But when the Italian Ministry of Health approached UMDNJ about sharing its expertise in orthopaedic trauma through a joint educational effort, CCOE did not hesitate to  step in.

The four-day conference, held in Perugia, Italy, featured presenters from top Italian universities and medical centers as well as key faculty from UMDNJ’s New Jersey Medical School.  The Italian and American course co-directors shared responsibility for major elements of the conference, including setting the agenda and reviewing the content.

1st Annual Advances in Cardiovascular Disease Management for the Primary Care Physician

Funded by educational grants from various pharmaceutical and device companies.

Local programming covering global topics of importance for healthcare practitioners and their patients is a key component of CCOE’s partnership with UMDNJ’s eight schools.

Directed by Marc Klapholz, MD, from the New Jersey Medical School and featuring experts from the School and other institutions around the country, this meeting brought together over 200 local PCPs to hear the latest thinking in the role of the PCP in CVD management.  The full-day event at the Short Hills Hilton provided a forum for learning through the sharing of information by the speakers and the informal networking of the attendees.

Introduction to Dentistry for the Dental Industry

Past participants include personnel from Centrix Dental, Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, Carl Zeiss Surgical, Cardinal Health, and the Delta Dental Plan of New Jersey.

The Continuing Dental Education Division is dedicated to helping providers maintain understanding and proficiency in new techniques, technologies and dental materials as well as sound methods of practice management and growth.  At the same time, its mission of education also includes dental industry personnel, with the recognition that a better understanding of clinical practice within the industry will lead to improved device and technology development and enhanced patient care.

A small-group, intensive three day ‘mini-dental school’ is held annually to allow members of the dental industry to immerse themselves in the world of dental practice. Taught by the New Jersey Dental School faculty, this course incorporates a mix of academic lectures, presentation of clinical procedures, hands-on exercises, and discussions of real-world dental issues.
