OVERVIEW top

PREREQUISITE: High School Diploma or equivalent to be submitted with application.

We are pleased to offer recognition by certificate of study for individuals who wish to increase their knowledge of psychiatric rehabilitation but are not currently pursuing an undergraduate degree. Certificate courses are offered for academic credit and may be applied to Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree programs offered by the University of Medicine and Dentistry – School of Health Related Professions (UMDNJ-SHRP).

Earn 18 credits as follows:

  • PSRT 1101 Introduction to Principles of Psychiatric Rehabilitation, 3 credits
    History, philosophy, values and methods of psych. rehab.
  • PSRT 1102 Communication Techniques for Interviewing and Counseling, 3 credits
    Principles, skills, values and attitudes of therapeutic communication
  • PSRT 1103 Introduction to Group Dynamics and Process, 3 credits
    Principles and skills for the effective use of groups
  • PSRT 1204 Clinical Principles of Psychosocial Rehabilitation, 3 credits
    Psychopathology as it interacts with rehabilitation intervention efforts
  • PSRT 1019 Clinical Practicum in Psychiatric Rehabilitation I, 6 credits
    Lectures and seminars interface with clinical experience to integrate
    theory and practice

Please be advised...Students must complete all other certificate courses before taking PSRT 1019, which is a fieldwork seminar. When registering for PSRT 1019, students should keep in mind that they will need to attend a weekly 3 hour seminar and do 15 hours of fieldwork per week plus travel and homework time to meet the course requirements. Hours at the field placement site are usually daytime hours.

For those already working in the field of mental health, the Program Director must pre-approve the student’s worksite and job requirements before it can be used as an internship placement. Students should not assume that any job in the field of human services would count as an appropriate internship placement.
