What
is the Certificate in Clinical Systems
Management?
The
Certificate in Clinical Systems Management
is a unique graduate certificate
program that allows you to design
your own program of study based on
your learning needs and career goals.
Individuals enrolled in the program
are required to complete two core
courses: "Multidisciplinary
Dimensions of Clinical Systems Management" (3cr.)
and "Clinical Management" (3cr.). The
remaining six credits can be taken
from specialized courses in specific
health systems areas. Completion
of 12 credits results in a graduate
Certificate in Clinical Systems Management.
When taken for academic credit, the
credits may be applied to graduate
degree programs offered by SHRP,
including the Master of Science in
Health Systems.
Who
may apply to the Certificate program?
Health
care professionals who have earned
a bachelor's degree may apply to the
graduate Certificate program.
Are
there additional prerequisites?
You
should possess good basic computer
skills, including those needed for
successful Internet browsing and
searching, e-mailing and word processing. You
must also have remote (off campus)
access to Internet services, to include
at least Internet browsing capability.
UMDNJ provides an e-mail account
for all students but does not provide
Internet access. Specific information
regarding minimum hardware and software
requirements is posted at http://www.umdnj.edu/webctweb/browser.html
Why
would I apply to the Certificate in
Clinical Systems Management Program
rather than the Master of Science in
Health Systems program?
If
you already have a graduate degree
or are unsure if you wish to pursue
a master’s degree, you may choose
to enroll in the Certificate program.
If you wish to pursue the master’s
degree upon completion of the Certificate
program, courses completed for the
Certificate may be applied to the Master
of Science in Health Systems program.
You must earn a “C” grade
or greater for courses in the Certificate
program to be applied to the Master’s
program. Additionally, if you have
never taken an online course before,
enrolling in the Certificate program
before committing to a full master’s
degree program is a good way to determine
whether online learning is for you.
What
content is taught in the two core courses?
Course
descriptions for the core courses are
as follows:
Multi-disciplinary
Dimensions of Clinical Systems Management
(3 credits) (IDST5100)
Description: Clinical managers are
challenged with multi-faceted responsibilities
involving interaction with a variety
of clinical departments and components
of changing health care systems. Increasingly,
clinical systems managers are responsible
for several areas outside of their
specific disciplines. This course is
designed to provide the foundation
for health care managers to effectively
function as multi-disciplinary and
multiunit managers. Personnel, regulatory
issues, technical issues, and reimbursement
issues, covering the following clinical
areas are analyzed: laboratory, imaging,
diagnostic medical sonography, vascular
technology, nuclear medicine, pharmacy,
respiratory care, dietetics, health
information management. As needed,
additional clinical areas are included.
Clinical
Management (3 credits) (NUTR6400)
Description: Applications of the
principles of management in various
settings: acute
and long-term care, ambulatory care,
consultant services and health related
business. Theories, techniques
and tools drawn from current literature
in business, management, health care,
along with innovative practices are
applied to management. Foundations
of management, standards of practice,
organizational design, and policies
and procedures are used to teach development
of a management framework. Other
topics will include strategic planning,
financial and human management, leadership
styles, meetings, mentoring and task
delegation.

feedback from course instructors, and
opportunities to participate in threaded
discussions are built into the program.

to log on frequently. Your instructor
may recommend a minimum number of times
per week. You are expected to dedicate
9 – 12 hours per week for each
graduate course.

practice in using some of its most
commonly used features. Each
online course provides additional
information about WebCT. Most students
find navigating through a UMDNJ – SHRP
online course fairly easy after completing
the orientation. For more information
about WebCT, please visit: www.webct.com. For
more information about WebCT at UMDNJ,
