Center for BioDefense - Mission

The September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were followed by an unprecedented biological weapons release, compromising the public health of the region. In response to this crisis, New Jersey Medical School’s Center for Biodefense has stepped up its efforts to expand basic research in biodefense and infectious diseases and to educate the community about bioterrorism and its impact on public health. This website will inform the user of the following goals of the NJMS Center for Biodefense:

1. Take leadership role at NJMS in developing strong research programs relating to bioterrorism agents

2. Develop educational programs for NJMS and the community

3. Develop clinical and laboratory protocols for patients, specimens and environmental samples

4. Coordinate closely with other activities at UMDNJ including EMS, statewide surveillance

5. Liase with neighboring hospitals and the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services for disaster preparedness
