Mission & Structure
The mission of the UMDNJ Student Senate is
-
to serve as the official voice of the UMDNJ students on any and all issues of student concern
-
to serve as effective advocates for students and their student governments within central UMDNJ administration, and
-
to facilitate increased inter-school student activities and involvement
Composition
To fulfill this mission at an institution that spans eight schools and five campuses, the Student Senate is comprised of three representatives (termed ‘Senators’) from each of the eight constituent academic units of UMDNJ and any number of unelected student participants (termed ‘Members-at-Large’). Senators are elected representatives of each school’s students and student government association (SGA). If you would like to know more about the process of becoming a Senator from your school, contact your individual SGA directly or email studentsenate@umdnj.edu for information on how to do so.
Structure
The entirety of the Senate meets four times per year, on the fourth weekend of the month in August, November and February and May on a rotating schedule of locations between the Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway and Stratford campuses. All meetings are equipped with conference call capabilities for members who cannot be present in person.
The bulk of the work of the Student Senate is accomplished through its five standing committees – Academic Affairs, Community Service, Internal Affairs, Legislative Affairs and University Affairs. You can learn more about these committees and their initiatives by navigating to their individual pages on this site (see the sidebar on the left side of every page). Committees meet a minimum of once monthly over a conference call.
