INITIATIVE ONE:  Promote Student Collaboration

  1. Student Senate Sponsored Grand Rounds
The Senate hopes to coordinate a first-of-its-kind university-wide student-sponsored grand rounds session on a topic of relevance to students as well as o the University community! The first session will relate to coordinating a multi-disciplinary international humanitarian and medical relief effort - and will take place in the 2010-2011 academic year.

  2. Student Curriculum
The idea of including students in the development of the academic curriculum not only promotes collaboration between the students and administration, but gives students a sense of empowerment and control regarding their education. This collaboration can promote greater student motivation, determination, and internal satisfaction within each individual program offered at UMDNJ which promotes continued support for UMDNJ in the future.

INITIATIVE TWO:  Foster Professional and Humanistic Learning Environment

  1. Fair and Effective Academic Integrity Procedures
The Student Handbook at each of UMDNJ’s eight schools was researched to carefully examine the policies and procedures regarding the disciplinary process. The goal was to promote academic and professional integrity while allowing the students protection of their rights as they are going through disciplinary procedures. The Academic Affairs Committee sought to identify areas of concern that may leave the student inappropriately vulnerable to inconsistencies and arbitrary decisions made by administrators. The Committee subsequently made recommendations for how the policies could be improved in a report entitled “Disciplinary Action Protocols and Processes Analysis and Report”. The committee continues to review these procedures and issues relating to them.

  2. Humanism and Excellence in Teaching
The Senate has been given permission to create a Student Senate Award for excellence in teaching and administration. We are working on drafting selection criteria and protocols for nominating and voting for candidates.
