Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS)

Faculty members who are employed by the University at less than 88% of the full-time equivalent and earning $1500 or more per year are required to enroll in the States’ Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). This is a defined benefit plan that establishes a retirement income based on the number of years of credited pension service. The faculty member is vested in the plan after ten years of credited service. New full-time faculty members with existing PERS membership have the option of maintaining their membership in the PERS or transferring to the ABP. It is the faculty member’s responsibility to advise the campus Human Resources Office of any current or prior State of New Jersey pension participation.
