Advanced Public Health Leadership Program Announced at UMDNJ

NEW BRUNSWICK — The New Jersey Center for Public Health Preparedness (NJCPHP) at the UMDNJ-School of Public Health is accepting applications for its 2008 Public Health Leadership Initiative for Emergency Response (PHLIER) fellowship program that begins on November 26-27. PHLIER is designed for working public health professionals who seek to advance their leadership skills by working with challenging public health cases such as emerging pathogens, bioterrorism, natural disasters and health department design. There is no charge for the fellows accepted into this demanding program.
In its third year as the state’s only public health leadership program, PHLIER features public health, health care and political professionals playing various roles in the case studies or offering insights on the many factors that have or will influence our state’s public health system. PHLIER’s goal is to provide current public health workers with the skills needed to become the next generation of public health leaders.
“Every public health professional must know how to be a public health leader,” said Dr. Drew Harris, the director of PHLIER. “When disaster strikes, they must have the skills and knowledge to step forward and work with our colleagues in emergency response and health care.”
A team of NJCPHP faculty and staff leads all sessions, which consist of an initial two-day retreat followed by one-day seminars in each of the following eight months. All of the classes take place on the UMDNJ campus in New Brunswick/Piscataway.
The PHLIER cases are set within a fictional community called “Phlierton,” which is designed as a typical New Jersey region complete with many public health and political challenges, a diverse population and geography, and complicated history. As a realistic community, Phlierton looks like New Jersey but is a safe place for PHLIER fellows to explore different response techniques and approaches, while avoiding the parochial interests that so often plague good public health. After completing the program, the PHLIER fellows will be able to apply what they have learned in their own departments.
