New Jersey Surgical Oncologist Receives Prestigious Award
at International Conference
CINJ Scientist Receives a Near Half-Million Dollars
for Future Breast Cancer Research

NEW BRUNSWICK — David Gorski, MD, PhD, Surgical Oncologist at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Associate Professor of Surgery at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, has been presented with the 2007 Advanced Clinical Research Award (ACRA) in Breast Cancer at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
Notification of the $450,000 award, presented by the ASCO Foundation (which works collaboratively with the Society on educational programs and recognizing excellence in clinical research in the field of oncology) was made public during the five-day event, which was held in Chicago this week. The funding will go toward supporting Gorski's research titled: Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor-1: Validation of a Serendipitously Discovered Molecular Target for Breast Cancer Treatment. The award, which will be funded by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, will span a three-year period beginning July 1.
Said Gorski of the award, "It is through the support of ASCO that this award will help me reach my goal of becoming a true translational researcher. ASCO provides my colleagues and I a forum in which clinicians and basic scientists can work together in a collaborative effort. Cancer is more than just one disease. That is why in order to obtain the best cancer treatments - and hope for a cure -- it is crucial that a multidisciplinary approach is taken and information shared. I am honored to be a part of such an organization which greatly supports that goal."
The annual meeting, according to ASCO literature, aims to foster communication among oncology-related subspecialties and the exchange of a wide-range of ideas related to cancer. The event is attended by international clinical researchers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other related health professionals. This year's conference is focusing on advances in research in breast, lung, and head and neck cancers among others.
