Nursing Association will Present Prestigious

ATLANTIC CITY — Dr. Susan W. Salmond, interim dean of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - School of Nursing, will receive a prestigious award from the New Jersey State Nurses Association for excellence in education. The award will be presented at the 10th Annual New Jersey Nursing Convention, which will be held at the Tropicana Casino & Resort in Atlantic City Convention Center from March 28 to March 30.
Dr. Salmond will receive the 2007 C.A.R.E. Award for Excellence in Education, the highest honor bestowed by the New Jersey State Nurses Association, an organization that represents thousands of nurses statewide. The C.A.R.E. Award for Excellence in Education recognizes a nurse from an academic or non-academic setting who has demonstrated excellence in developing and implementing programs that enhance nursing education and that address emerging healthcare needs. C.A.R.E. awards are given each year in four categories: Clinical Practice, Administration, Research and Education.
Prior to serving as interim dean of the UMDNJ-School of Nursing, which has campuses in Newark and Stratford, Dr. Salmond was an associate professor of nursing and vice dean for academic affairs. She joined the university in 2005 and this Westfield resident previously held positions as associate dean for graduate studies and associate dean for administration and planning.
Dr. Salmond spearheaded the school’s development of a new Master of Science in Nursing program in Clinical Leadership in a collaborative partnership with area healthcare systems, and the state’s first Doctor of Nursing Practice program. Both were launched at UMDNJ in 2006. Before joining the UMDNJ-School of Nursing, Dr. Salmond was a professor and director of the graduate programs and then chairperson of the Department of Nursing at Kean University. She is also a former faculty member at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Dr. Salmond received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) degree from Villanova University, her Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree from Seton Hall University, and her Doctor of Education (EdD) from Teachers College at Columbia University. Certified in transcultural nursing, she also holds certification in advanced nursing administration.
A nationally renowned expert in the field of Orthopaedic Nursing, she is past president of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses. She is co-editor of the text, Orthopaedic Nursing, co-editor of the first three editions of Core Curriculum for Orthopaedic Nursing, and research editor of the journal, Orthopaedic Nursing. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and presented nationally on topics including orthopaedics, nursing care delivery, and leadership.
Dr. Salmond’s research focuses on nursing care delivery models and coping with acute and chronic illness. Her research has been funded by several foundations and the federal Healthcare Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). N umerous medical centers in New Jersey have benefited from her expertise and she serves on the Board of Directors at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center.
